Ron Wilkinson 1936 – 2023

It is with profound sadness that STAND announces the death of Ron Wilkinson, Chairman of STAND. He passed away peacefully in Castle Hill Hospital on Tuesday 4th April 2023.

Ruth Creasey, Secretary of STAND said,

“For STAND, we have lost a precious friend and cherished colleague. He showed warmth, commitment and enthusiasm to those he met and worked alongside and he had a big heart for the community.

His knowledge, experience and memories of Hull’s fishing industry came from 25 years as a fisherman – from Galley Boy to Skipper; also as a teacher at the Hull Nautical School and as a trainer of Saudi Nationals for 15 years in the Gulf, working for Saudi Aramco Oil Co.

Sadly, Ron will not see the fruits of his hard fought 20 year battle as a member of the STAND committee to install the Memorial to Lost Trawlermen on St Andrew’s Retail Park which is due to commence on 17th April. However, his legacy and memory will live on.”

STAND extends our heartfelt condolences to Ron’s family & friends.

Visit to the Arctic Corsair 2024

On Monday 16th September all the STAND Trustees enjoyed a visit to the Arctic Corsair with Hull Maritime and a group of volunteers. Our time spent talking with some of the other volunteers, hearing their stories and taking in all the excellent work that has been carried out on the trawler was special. Dunstons have done an amazing job to restore her – she looks fantastic! Well done to all at Dunstons and to Hull Maritime.

FUNDRAISING CONCERT AT HESSLE TOWN HALL…

SATURDAY 17th MAY 2025 at 7.30pm.

THE HULL MALE VOICE CHOIR AND THE U3A BARELY AWAKE UKULELE GROUP ARE BACK!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our musical evening on Saturday evening (17th May).

We were entertained by the Hull Male Voice Choir and the U3A Barely Awake Ukulele Group. The refreshments with homemade buns and the raffle went down a treat!

After costs, the ticket sales and the raffle raised £300 towards the maintenance of the beautiful landscaped gardens at the Memorial to the Lost Trawlermen of Hull on St Andrews Quay. It is important we keep the Memorial site looking respectful and special for all those who visit and spend time there throughout the year.

The STAND trustees are very grateful for the generosity shown by those who came on Saturday. We hope you enjoyed the evening.

FUNDRAISING CONCERT SATURDAY 14th SEPTEMBER 2024

On Saturday 14th September a great evening of music, laughter and participation was enjoyed by all who attended our STAND fundraising concert at Hessle Town Hall. We were once again entertained by the Hull Male Voice Choir and the Barely Awake U3A Ukulele Group…with a raffle and tasty buns at the interval too.

There was a special moment for STAND during the evening with a visit from Ron Crimlis (photo below), the son of the late John Crimlis who was the founder member of STAND in 1989 and was joined by local historian, Dr Alec Gill. Ron was visiting from New Zealand with his wife.

Thank you to all who helped to make the evening such a success!
